I’ve Been Working on the Railroad

little_red_caboose_frontI wanted to include this song on my Let’s Go Music with Friends collection because of the interesting rhythm and tempo changes, but because it’s so wordy and has no chorus, it’s a hard one for kids to sing. In order to help kids feel the rhythmic changes and not get bored we used sticks and eggs when we sang this song.

I’ve been working on the railroad,
All the live long day,
I’ve been working on the railroad,
Just to pass the time away.

Don’t you hear the whistle blowing,
Rise up so early in the morn,
Don’t you hear the captain shouting,
Dinah blow your horn.

Dinah won’t you blow,
Dinah won’t you blow,
Dinah won’t you blow your hor-or-orn.
Dinah won’t you blow,
Dinah won’t you blow,
Dinah won’t you blow your horn.

Someone’s in the kitchen with Dinah,
Someone’s in the kitchen I know-o-o-o.
Someone’s in the kitchen with Dinah,
Strumming on the old banjo,

And singing,
Fe-fi-fiddley-I-oh
Fe-fi-fiddley-I-oh, oh, oh, oh.
Fe-fi-fiddley-I-oh
Strumming on the old banjo.

John Denver sings a nice version of I’ve Been Working On the Railroad on the album All Aboard!
