The Grand Old Duke of York

VIDEO This traditional nursery rhyme is a fun lap song for active babies and toddlers. I love this illustration by Steve Morrison. His blog is full of sweet and playful illustrations for kids.

The grand old duke of york,
He had 10,000 men,
He marched them up to the top of the hill,
Then he marched them down again.

When they’re up, they’re up,
And when they’re down, they’re down,
And when they’re only halfway there,
There neither up nor down.

the second part is good if not better:

He marched them to the left
He marched them to the right
He marched them ’til they were upside down
    Oh what a silly sight!

(you can do great actions with this as well)

I am a Captain in a Girl Scout Company and we sing this song all the time. We love it because the kids invariably cheat in the actions for ‘up, down and halfway’. I wanna thank Emma for the 2nd part. Cant wait to come up with some funny actions for that. Maybe i can ask the girls to sugest some actions and pick the best.
Lovely place to visit Erin. Thank you.
